With the discusion of covers going on, I thought I would start a new thread on Covers. I know it's impossible to think of a top ten as such, but suggest 10 covers you would recomend as contenders to beat the original. Here's mine.

Joe Cocker - Bye Bye Blackbird

If I'm not mistaken the Judas Priest drummer for the Green Manalishi recording was the late Les Binks. A drummer from my home town. I had the pleasure of working with Les once. On a visit home one Christmas he stood in when our drummer was ill to help us out. Fabulous Drummer, but way to agresssive for the type of band we where, covering the Christmas tunes for the local workers parties. The double bass drum was not really needed for "Merry Christmas Everyone". A nice guy with no big ego considering the other acts he had played with.

Great musicians dont have egos well the bass and drums dont we just stay in the background making everyone else sound good 😂😂 (well sometimes) then when we do step forward usually all hell breaks loose.

I also had theKenneth Bumby Whiskey in the Jar is usually the first song that comes to mind for me, when asked to pick an all time favourite. I also had the pleasure of performing it once on stage with Eric Bell. But another story on the song, that I find amusing, is from the origions of Lynotts career. He started off at around 16 years of age playing in a band called Skid Row. A very young Gary Moore was also in the band. On the back of Hendrix and Cream, the Bass player and band leader Brush Shiels decided they should become a three piece and Lynott was sacked. In compensation he gave Lynott a bass guitar and taught him how to play it.

The karma is six years later, Thin Lizzy hit the big time with Whiskey in the Jar. Ever since that Brush Shiels has been releasing Irish Folks songs rocked up to try to emulate that. He has never had a major hit with any of them. He's now 80 years old. It's not gonna happen.

For me, most of them began to sound too polished in the studio. Eurpoe and the Final Coundown or Survivor's Eye of the Tiger. I just visualise a technician in the studio working his ass off many hours after the band had left. They lost the raw aggression of bands like Free, The Taste, Thin Lizzy, Led Zepplin, Wishbone Ash ....I could go on for hours. Metal was never my thing so I think around that time I started to take more of an interest in a more Country influenced style of Rock like Bob Seger or Lynyrd Skynyrd. Hence my love of Country Rock today.   More ...

A lot of the others sound similar. For me the female voice does not have the same distinction the men have. But to add another 9 in no particular order.

      Reba McEntire
Sandy Posey (vastly under rated and spent a lot of her career doing backing vocals for others)
Dolly Parton (not so much for her voice but as an overall talent, Singer, Songwriter, Musician, Business Woman)
      Janice Joplin
      Mama Cass
Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey need mentioned on vocal ability alone, but I hated them singing. It alwasy seemd like they thought their voice was more important than the song.
I'll agree on the above list with Stevie Nicks, Instantly recognisable.
Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, I also agree with. I'm wrecking my brain trying to think of the name of a thrid singer who used to do backing vocals for both of them. The lady also had solo albums that both Ronstadt and Harris did backing vocals on. I'll write the name down when I remember it.

One a closing note, here is a video I love, now that I know the story behind it. Carol King revealed what was happening here during an interview once.

I never could stand listening to Aretha Frankin. Like Whitney and Mariah, she over sings everthing and she thinks the song is about her. Only differnce is "I think" she is massivlely over rated. An example to the emperors new clothes. Everyone else says she's good so she must be. Listen to her 10 minute version of Amazing Grace. Rating by critics as the best ever performance of the song. In truth it's poison.

      Anyway ...

According to Carol King, in this video, it was supposed to be an equal performace between the women. Aretha Franklin stated to sing over the top of the others and it starts to irrate Celine Dion. You can see on her face she is not pleased. Suddenly she has had enough and looks straight at Aretha Franklin and hits a note Franklin will not match. Look close, you can see the others laughing. Franklin actually makes two attemps to hit the note and fails and the song ends with her shrugging her shoulders. She knew she got her ass handed to her that night.

Not in any order, though Beth Hart really does take some beating, if anyone could it would have been Ann Wilson back in the day.

All these ladies have prefect voices. No tricks no electronic magical boxes. What they sang in the studio was brilliant but even better live, and yes Miley Cyrus has one of the best voices of this modern era. I didn't include Dolly, because vocally the others have a huge edge.
