BENIDORM NOVEMBER FIESTA AND FANCY DRESS DAY  -  GENERAL INFORMATION

Benidorm November Fiesta and Fancy Dress Day

During the Fiesta Week there will be lots more afternoon shows in the New Town, check out the WHATS ON GUIDE for all the information

Covid protocols during the Fiestas (including fancy dress day 18th) - A meeting was held yesterday (10th Nov) between the town hall, a regional government delegate and police authorities over health protocols with the upcoming fiestas patronales, and the extra day of the fancy dress on the 18th. No word has been released yet on what will be allowed, or more important what "wont" be allowed given the position of Benidorm of being currently in the official category of "Extreme risk of covid transmission". More details will be released when available.

Please do not park on Calle Gerona and adjacent streets on 18th, vehicles will be removed for that day, this is in order to generate more space in the area so that social distancing anti-covid measures can be adhered to. There will also be police reinforcements throughout the area and other measures to ensure the event is safe.

Police reinforcements will be in place to avoid el botellón (groups drinking on the streets) and crowds during the Festivities

Benidorm November Fiesta - Fiestas Patronales

Benidorm honours its two patron saints, the Virgen del Sufragio and San Jaime apostle, with the annual "Fiestas Patronales" local fiestas.  The streets are transformed for the entire event with floral decorations, lively musicians, open -air theatres, firework displays and religious parades.

The fiesta dates back to March 1740 when a boat appeared just of the coast of Benidorm dragged in by a violent storm.  The boat was burned to prevent an epidemic, but local boys found an image of the Virgin in the rubble and took here to the local church, later a chapel was built.  This is the story that forms a large part of the November fiesta and each year the story is re-told on Poniente beach on Saturday.

Benidorm November Fiestas always begin on the Friday of the second weekend of November and officially end the following Wednesday with a spectacular Firework display.

During EVERY fiesta you will see Mascletas listed on the schedules, these are the loud, thunderous fire crackers. They are fired randomly, particularly during the day. They are not for the faint hearted, they are really loud and not designed to see as such as they are not really pretty but are designed to stimulate your body through rhythmic sounds and vibrations.

November Fiesta Benidorm

28th October Updates Benidorm to deploy a special device at the Majors Patronals Festivals to monitor compliance with anti-Covid-19 measures

Local and National Police have developed a special plan to prevent the practice of unauthorized activities such as el botellón (groups drinking on the streets)

The device will be “very similar to last year” explained  Jesus Carrobles the Holiday Councilor, where “special attention will be given to anti-Covid protective measures in the premises where events are held.”

The purpose of the device is to observe the compliance of all established measures, such as to avoid crowds and to check that attendees at the concerts in the Julio Iglesias auditorium carry the Covid certificate.

The Party Edul has appealed to the “responsibility” of citizens to celebrate the holidays within the established health measures, and has indicated that the device will begin operating this weekend on the occasion of Peñas Day.

In the face of the Majors Patronals Festivals, the councilor has emphasized the effort made to alter the routes of the processions, the Offer and even the celebration of mass “in order to seek open spaces and minimize risks.” “It’s about” has continued “to try not to wander through narrow streets and places that can cause a great concentration of people”."

Benidorm November Fiesta

Private security personnel and Local Police will control the adjacent streets and the accesses to some  points, such as the Plaza de la Iglesia, to which no person outside the authorities and the festeros themselves and those participating in the acts will be allowed access.  Private personnel will request and control access to the events in the Julio Iglesias, and only people with a vaccination certificate will be permitted entry.

The usual popular correfocs will not be celebrated this year. - Correfocs are a moving fire and sound show, and is really something to see,  a group of individuals will dress as devils and light up fireworks – fixed on devil's pitchforks or strung above the route, dancing to the sound of rhythmic drums, they set off their fireworks among the crowds. The spectators that participate dress to protect themselves against small burns and attempt to get as close as possible to the devils, running with the fire. Other spectators will watch from "safe" distances, rapidly retreating as necessary. don´t wear your best clothes for this event and keep your head covered).

*What is a “PEÑA”

The dictionary defines it as “a group of friends“. That is one of the meanings of the word peña and indeed peñas are (or at least used to be) composed just of groups of friends but they have evolved towards today’s “Cultural and recreational associations”.

50 to 60 years ago a few peñas (groups of friends) begun organising events for the youth in several cities and villages across Spain, because back then most of the Festivals were purely religious and they lacked activities to entertain them.

Today peñas (the current cultural associations) vary in size from just a dozen members up to thousands, here in Benidorm there are around 4000 people that are in the various peñas.

What originally were a few friends playing their own guitars, cooking lunch and sharing time during the festivals, have become organisations that prepare concerts, and are directly involved in the parades etc
