Blue Flag Beaches - Alicante Province
Blue Flag Beaches Alicante Province 2022 - The province of Alicante will have 74 Blue Flag beaches for 2022, two Beaches achieve this distinction for the first time in history, Baladrar cove, Benissa and Dels Vivers beach (Guardamar del Segura). BUT Benidorm the tourist capital of the Costa Blanca, loses its blue flags for Poniente Beach (23rd June Poniente beach has been awarded the Qualitur 2022 Flag from Turisme for the quality of the waters and sand) and La Cala de Finestrat as they fall off this years list.
Benidorm City Council has announced that it will appeal the withdrawal of the Blue Flag of Poniente. As explained by Councilor Mónica Gómez, the deprivation of the badge is due to an analysis of the punctual water last year and has insisted that the beach complies with the most demanding quality certifications. In fact, sources of the Consell have assured that the quality of the water "is good". The decision has been made "based on the result of a single analysis carried out in mid-June 2021.
Benidorm City Council have pointed out that there are other parameters, such as accessibility or the services provided by the beaches, which both in Levante and Mal Pas and Poniente "are excellent". Hence, they have described as "unfair" the decision adopted by the FEE (European Federation of Environmental Education), even more so if it is taken into account that "benidorm beaches are accessible throughout the year and the only ones with cleaning and rescue services ALL year round".
The Valencian Community is once again a national leader of Spanish Blue Flag Beaches, having been allocated 139 badges in 2022, two more than in 2021.
In order to qualify for the Blue Flag, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria must be met and maintained including, the quality of the water, the high level of beach services and the safety they offer to bathers.
Blue Flag is present in almost fifty countries, and is a global standard of tourism ecoquality.
