British Dad Suffered Broken Neck

British dad Suffered a Broken Neck in Benidorm Pool Accident.  A dream holiday in Benidorm turned into a nightmare for a British dad-of-two after a stranger's prank left him with a broken neck after pushing him into the pool for a prank.

Martin came to Benidorm as part of a group of 13, on a stag Party, the 31 year old from Wigan insists he wasn't drunk at the time of the accident.

A stranger pushed him into the pool and he attempted to dive into the water, unaware of how shallow the pool was. Tragically, he struck his head on the bottom, splitting it open, causing serious injuries.

  • “I didn't know how shallow it was, and I just didn't have time to react,”

He was taken to a nearby hospital where his head injury required 16 stitches, and after further tests it was discovered that he had fractured his neck in 3 places and broken his back.

To make matters worse, Martin hadn't taken out travel insurance before flying to Spain—something he now calls a “stupid” mistake.

The unexpected hospital stay and rearranged flights cost him approximately £1.500.

Martin's 63-year-old dad, flew to Benidorm to be at his bedside and was thankfully able to help him with the mounting medical bills.

The 31 year old was able to fly back to the UK on Monday (16th June) and was taken Wigan's Royal Albert Edward Infirmary to get checked out, with doctors finding five fractures in his neck and back.

Martin is now wearing a neck brace, and is awaiting further scans to find out the extent of the damage.  He can only walk or stand up for about five minutes before he needs to sit back down.

Martin is unsure what his road to recovery will be like and when or if will get back to his normal fitness.

  • "I know it's going to be a long road to recovery but I've got through the hard part, which was getting home and being around people who can support me."

He is now recovering at home in Wigan and warns others to take safety seriously, and take out travel insurance.

Stories such as this just show how importan it is to take out travel insurance. If you do not have appropriate insurance before you travel, you could be liable for emergency costs including medical treatment. We recommend you buy your travel insurance as soon as you book your trip.
