If you fancy something nice and relaxing away from all the noise Hotel Gran Delfin it's at the other side of Benidorm you've got the best of everything beach front hotel typically Spanish/English great food, lovely staff! No noise you see the sun rising from your room every morning. This hotel for me is a hidden gem. Yes it's slightly out of it but there's taxis and buses. We stayed here last year and are going again end of this month.

    Carol Andrew - Hotel location

The 4 star Gran Hotel Delfin is situated at the far end of the Poniente beach about 2 miles from Benidorm Old Town and even further from most of the night life.

There is a bus (number 3) that stops outside the hotel but the journey into town takes about 30 minutes as the route goes a long way round. Taxi journeys are also longer then you might expect due to the one way system. The cost of a taxi into the centre of town was about €7-10.

If you are looking for a quiet hotel situated right by the beach then this is an excellent choice. If you want to make frequent visits into Benidorm then this is probably not the hotel for you.

    Who stays there?

Judging by the age of most of the guests and the number of notices in reception, it appears that Saga holidays have a big presence at the hotel. Speaking to a couple of people they said they were booked with Saga on an ‘all inclusive’ basis. We booked through booking.com and were not offered this option.

We heard a couple of the Saga group complain that there were Spanish people staying at what they considered a ‘Saga’ hotel. They seemed to think it should be for their exclusive use. Luckily not everyone there thought that way.

    The bedrooms

We were staying at the hotel with my husband’s sister in two standard double rooms. Although the rooms were the same price they were very different.

The bathroom of one had a bath with a shower over it, a toilet, wash basin and bidet. The view from this room looked over the pool.

The other room’s bathroom was more in the format of a ‘wet room’ with an open shower area and no bidet. This room was, in my opinion, far inferior and overlooked a fire escape and air conditioning units which were quite noisy when the window was open.

The better room was number 220. The inferior one was 121. You may like to bear this in mind if you are considering this hotel.

There are more expensive room options with a balcony and some have a sea view. Be aware though that the sea view rooms at the front of the hotel are over the outside bar/terrace which could be quite noisy until it closes at midnight.

    Food and drink

We opted for half board. It was possible to take the meal at either lunch or dinner.

As with most hotels nowadays, all meals were buffet style.

The food was excellent both in terms of selection and quality. In my opinion one of the best hotel buffets I have had anywhere.

To get from the terrace to the main part of the hotel you had to walk through the dining room which, during meal times, felt rather odd.

For those of us not on ‘all inclusive’ the drinks in the hotel were very expensive. A glass of wine (quite a small pour) was €3. A white coffee was €1.90 and a dry Martini and lemonade €5.50. All cocktails were €6. On top of these prices was 10% IVA.

    Other comments

I found the constant music being played in the corridors and lift annoying but some people might like it. It was not nice gentle background type music but quite loud 60s/70s pop music.

Staff at reception were friendly and very helpful.

There was a ‘pillow menu’ where you had a choice of 4 different types of replacement or extra pillows. We took this option as there was just one, not very thick pillow on each bed. There was no charge for this service.

There is a fridge and a safe in the room at no extra charge. There is also a complimentary bottle of water in the room on arrival.

Free WiFi is available throughout the hotel – you just need to ask at reception for the login details. There were also a couple of computers and a printer near reception for the use of guests.

It was stated that tea or coffee making facilities were available in the bedrooms on request. We asked for this and were just given a kettle – no cups, tea or coffee etc – just a kettle.

Evening entertainment was the same every night (Monday to Friday). It was a not very inspiring duo consisting of a guitarist and a keyboard player. Considering the hotel was full when we were there not many people attended the entertainment. I think this was partly due to the fact it was in a closed off area and not very well advertised.

    Overall opinion

We were originally booked to stay at the Benilux Park where we have stayed before and liked very much. Three days before our visit we were informed the hotel was full and were offered Prince Park as the only alternative. This would not have suited us so we chose to pay the extra for the Delfin (I had stayed there a couple of times in 1970/1971).

If you are a more mature couple looking for a quiet relaxing hotel near the beach with good food then this would be a good choice.

Due to the cost of drinks, booking ‘all inclusive’ with Saga would be a good option.

Looking at the notice board there seemed to be quite a good selection of excursions provided for the Saga group.

Carl Kundalini Reece -Its actually right on the beach front on playa poniente quite some way from Benidorm old town. However, beach front location and only a 10/20 min stroll to the old town.

Anna Kitson - It is a long way out from old town but apparently the hotel give tickets for the buses into the Old Town. I've never stayed there but my friends tell me it's good and the staff are lovely.
