The Burial of the Sardine
This event starts at 9:30 p.m. in the Plaza Mayor and will take place along Tomás Ortuño, Limones, Ruzafa, Paseo de la Carretera and Paseo de Colón streets, where the sardine will be burned. .
The burial ceremony came to replace older Spanish customs which were held to mark the end of the winter and is symbolic of the arrival of Spring, it is also seen as a good luck ritual to ensure the fishermen, who can now venture back out to sea without fear of the winter storms, had good hauls.
It’s also a symbolic burial of the past. The ceremony is stripping away the past, in a socially established ritual of chaos, burning out the mayhem of carnival and the long winter months, and ushering in from the ashes a new year, a society reborn and serious once again, ready to face the hardships of the future.

Saint Patricks Day Benidorm
St Patrick´s day FACTS
1. What Do We Celebrate On Saint Patrick's Day?
St. Patrick's Day started out as a feast day for St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. A feast day is pretty much just a celebration, usually in the Christian faith, that is commemorated with a meal. People traditionally celebrated St. Patrick's Day by attending mass and thinking about the life and legacy of St. Patrick.
2. Who Was Saint Patrick?
These days, St. Patrick's Day celebrations don't have much to do with the man for which the holiday is named. Nonetheless, he is an important figure in Irish Catholic history. Ironically, St. Patrick wasn't even Irish. He was born in Britain around A.D. 390 to an aristocratic Christian family. According to folklore, St. Patrick was kidnapped and brought to Ireland at 16, but he escaped and was reunited with his family in Britain at the encouragement of a voice he heard in his dreams, which later told him to go to Ireland. St. Patrick became a priest and then spent the rest of his life converting the Irish to Christianity.
3. Did He Really Get Rid Of All Of The Snakes In Ireland?
One common myth about St. Patrick is that he drove all of the snakes out of Ireland. Sure, there are no snakes in Ireland today, but there actually never were. The frigid waters that surround Ireland made it too cold for snakes to arrive there from Britain. When literature mentions St. Patrick getting rid of all of the snakes in Ireland, it is probably just a metaphor for ridding the country of its "old, evil, pagan ways."
4. Why Is Saint Patrick's Day On March 17?
We celebrate St. Patrick's Day on March 17 every year, but why is that? No, it's not just to have a holiday in March, which is usually a dull month in terms of major celebrations. The date commemorates the day St. Patrick died, believed to be in A.D. 461. Upon his death, St. Patrick was mostly forgotten. However, a mythology grew around the religious figure, and by the 9th or 10th century, people in Ireland began observing St. Patrick's Day as a feast day.
5. When Did It Become All About Partying?
So as you can see, St. Patrick's Day was a pretty tame holiday in the beginning. In fact, it was a minor religious holiday in Ireland until the 1970s. Pubs even closed on March 17 in Ireland every year until the 1970s. We can trace some of the modern revelry associated with St. Patrick's Day to the fact that prohibitions on eating meat, drinking and dancing during Lent were lifted for the day.
However, America is responsible for turning St. Patrick's Day into the big party we know and love today, which is totally not surprising. There's some debate over when the first St. Patrick's Day parade took place, but early celebrations happened in Boston in 1737 and New York in 1762. St. Patrick's Day celebrations continued to grow as more and more Irish immigrants came to the U.S., especially after the Irish Potato Famine hit in 1845. Today, there are celebrations in many small towns, big cities and bars across the country. New York's St. Patrick's Day parade is the world's oldest civilian parade and the largest parade in the U.S., Chicago is also famous for dyeing the Chicago River green every year for its St. Patrick's Day celebration.
6. Why Do We Wear Green?
At any St. Patrick's Day event you attend these days, you will just see a sea of green. There isn't really one reason why this is the official color of St. Patrick's Day, but the color green has a lot of connections to Ireland and springtime. It's featured in the Irish flag, Ireland is nicknamed the "Emerald Isle," it represents spring and it's the color of shamrocks, The Christian Science Monitor points out. That wholly American tradition comes from the idea that people thought wearing green helped ward off being pinched by leprechauns (seriously). Leprechauns would pinch anyone they could see, i.e. anyone not wearing green.
8. Why Are Shamrocks A Thing?
According to legend, St. Patrick used shamrocks, those three-leaf clovers, to explain the Holy Trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit while trying to convert people to Christianity, people didn't really start wearing shamrocks until as early as the 17th century.
9. Are Leprechauns Real?
No, of course not! Why would you ask such a thing? However, leprechauns do have a rich history in Irish folklore. Tales of these little fairies were passed down from generation to generation. They were said to be "shoemakers who socked away their profits in pots at the end of rainbows, or scattered them around in mountains, forests, or rocks," It is said that people have looked for leprechauns to get a piece of that gold and because they're rumoured to bring good luck.
10. What's The Deal With Corned Beef And Cabbage?
Even if you don't know anything about Irish culture, you've probably heard that corned beef and cabbage is a traditional Irish dish eaten on St. Patrick's Day. However, the corned beef part of the meal actually used to be bacon because cows were actually not generally used for their meat in Gaelic Ireland but their strength in the fields and their milk. Corned beef and cabbage is really an American creation, which originates from Irish immigrants in New York buying the meat from kosher butchers. The traditional St. Patrick's Day meal in Ireland is still lamb or bacon.

Most stores are closed, although some bakers and food stores may be open. Public transport services may run to a reduced schedule. Parades and other public events may cause some local disruption to traffic, especially in the centres of towns and villages.
If October 9 falls on a Sunday, regional or local authorities may move the public holiday to a different date. If October 9 falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many businesses and organizations are also closed on Monday, October 8, or Friday, October 10 to make the most of a long weekend.
Benidorm in October, what to expect from your holiday....
Public Holidays in October
History of Valencian Community Day
Known as 'Día de la Comunidad Valenciana', this holiday commemorates the capture of the city of Valencia from Moorish forces in 1238 by King James I of Aragon.
Founded as Valencia by the Romans, the city passed from Christian to Moorish control from the 8th century to the 13th century.
In the spring of 1238, King James I of Aragon laid siege to Valencia and after five months, the Moors finally surrendered on 28 September. On 9 October, James took possession of the city.
Whilst many people from different religions were allowed to stay, fifty thousand Moors were forced to leave. After the Christian victory the city was divided between the forces who had participated in the conquest.
James granted the city new charters of law (known as the 'Furs of Valencia'). The changes brought by James redefined the city and the region in many ways, forming the basis of the character and key traditions of the Valencian region.
The Valencian region gained full autonomy within Spain in 1982.
The autonomous community of Valencia's flag is widely displayed on the Day of the Valencian Community. It is based on the heraldic symbol of the ancient kingdom of Aragon, known as the Senyera. This flag has been in use since 1159. Valencia's flag is often displayed with the national flag of Spain and the European flag. The flag of the Valencian Community and of the city of Valencia, known as Reial Senyera (Valencianpronunciation: [reˈjal seˈɲeɾa], "Royal Senyera"),
October 9 is also the Day of Saint Dionysius (Sant Dionís), a saint also known as "the Areopagite". This saint is traditionally considered as the patron saint of lovers and there is the custom of giving the gift of a Mocaorà, a silken scarf containing marzipan pastries handcrafted by Valencia’s confectioners. Valencian men traditionally give their sweethearts gifts of marzipan sweets on this day. These sweets are wrapped in a piece of silk or placed in a decorative box.

October 12th - Fiesta Nacional de España also known as Columbus Day, Hispanic Day or the Dia de la Hispanidad.
This is a National Holiday and celebrated all over Spain. Schools, businesses, offices, banks etc will be closed.
The king of Spain supervises the raising of the Spanish national flag in the centre of Madrid on Hispanic Day. He and the prime minister lead a military parade after that. The parade includes representatives from most of Spain's military units and various military vehicles. Armed forces' planes perform aerobatics above the parade route and display yellow and red smoke to represent the Spanish flag. Radio, television and Internet news services broadcast live on these events.
Hispanic Day is a day off work and an opportunity to spend time quietly at home or in the company of family members and close friends.
History of Hispanic Day
This national holiday commemorates the exact date when Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas.
Columbus was attempting to find a western sea route to India. After leaving the Canary Islands, Columbus' ships had been sailing west for five weeks, when on the morning of 12 October 1492, land was spotted.
The sighting is recorded as having been made by a lookout, but Columbus insisted that he had seen a light from land a few hours earlier, therefore making sure that he was awarded a lifetime pension from the Spanish Royal family for being the first person to spot land.
They then made landfall at an island in the Bahamas, which he named San Salvador, though it is not sure which islands in the Bahamas this actually was.
Columbus' voyages across the Atlantic Ocean initiated the European exploration and colonization of the Americas.

Benidorm November Fiesta and Fancy-Dress Day - The famous November Fiesta dates for 2023 - 10th to 15th, Thursday 16th – Europe’s largest fancy dress party
Benidorm November Fiesta - Fiestas Patronales
Benidorm honours its two patron saints, the Virgen del Sufragio and San Jaime apostle, with the annual "Fiestas Patronales" local fiestas. The streets are transformed for the entire event with floral decorations, lively musicians, open -air theatres, firework displays and religious parades.
The fiesta dates back to March 1740 when a boat appeared just of the coast of Benidorm dragged in by a violent storm. The boat was burned to prevent an epidemic, but local boys found an image of the Virgin in the rubble and took her to the local church, later a chapel was built. This is the story that forms a large part of the November fiesta and each year the story is re-told on Poniente beach on Saturday.
Benidorm November Fiestas always begin on the Friday of the second weekend of November and officially ends the following Wednesday with a spectacular Firework display.
During EVERY fiesta you will see Mascletas listed on the schedules, these are the loud, thunderous firecrackers. They are fired randomly, particularly during the day. They are not for the faint hearted, they are really loud and not designed to see as such as they are not really pretty but are designed to stimulate your body through rhythmic sounds and vibrations.
Benidorm November Fiesta
*What is a “PEÑA”
The dictionary defines it as “a group of friends “. That is one of the meanings of the word peña and indeed peñas are (or at least used to be) composed just of groups of friends but they have evolved towards today’s “Cultural and recreational associations”.
50 to 60 years ago a few peñas (groups of friends) begun organising events for the youth in several cities and villages across Spain, because back then most of the festivals were purely religious and they lacked activities to entertain them.
Today peñas (the current cultural associations) vary in size from just a dozen members up to thousands, here in Benidorm there are around 4000 people that are in the various peñas.
What originally were a few friends playing their own guitars, cooking lunch and sharing time during the festivals, have become organisations that prepare concerts, and are directly involved in the parades etc
What are Correfocs - Translated it means "fire-runs" and they are one of the most striking events in any local festival, during the Correfocs, a group of individuals will dress as devils and light up fireworks which are fixed on devil's pitchforks or strung above the route, they then dance to the sound of a rhythmic drum group, their fireworks are set off among the crowds. The spectators that participate dress to protect themselves against small burns and attempt to get as close as possible to the devils, running with the fire. Other spectators will watch from a "safe" distance.

MERRY FIESTAS FOR EVERYONE!
Benidorm November Fiesta
This is not officially part of the Spanish Fiestas. It is however always held the day after the Spanish fiestas finish and is the most popular day celebrated by the British tourists.
This tradition started over 25 years ago when Monolo from Sinatras Cabaret bar offered a free drink to anyone who dressed up on the Thursday to continue the celebrations that bit longer. This idea took off and has turned into what is now Europe´s biggest fancy dress street party and each year it grows in popularity with between 30,000 - 40,000 people attend this special day, with most making the effort with their fancy dress outfits and anything goes. It is one of the greatest highlights of the year in Benidorm for many.
Dates vary – They official Spanish Fiesta always begin on the Friday of the second weekend of November and officially end the following Wednesday with Fancy Dress Day always held on the Thursday.
