HOW TO GET YOUR N.I.E NUMBER

INFORMATION CORRECT AS OF December 2018 - Please note that these instructions may vary if you are in a different area of Spain.

NOTE - People are now being asked to make appointments for Residencia where your NIE number will be given to you at the same time. Appointments are very very difficult to obtain at the moment due to the high demand, and if you do get an appointment you will more than likely be sent to Alicante.

You now need to make an appointment on line, and you can now print and fill in the forms online using form 790, some people are still being sent to Alicante and some to the Benidorm Police office.  Use this link -  https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/index.html   Please NOTE, this link does not work correctly from mobile devices.

You can of course pay someone to do all the hard work for you - 'Book your NIE Number Appointment today'  https://mynie.co.uk

Once you have your appointment and paid the correct fee of  9.54€  (this fee has recently risen) the procedure below will still be the same.

WHAT IS A SPANISH NIE NUMBER

The Spanish NIE number, short for Numero de Identificacion de Extranero, is a Foreigner Identification Number issued by the Administracion General del Estado (General Administration of the State) and is a fiscal identification number for foreigners who want to stay more than 3 months in Spain, or in order to be able to process certain transaction in Spain like buying/renting a property.

The equivalent of NIE for Spaniards is the NIF (Numero de Identificacion Fiscal)

The NIE number is different from the Empadronamiento or Padron Municipal which is about getting registered in your living community.

The Spanish NIE number starts with a letter, followed by seven numbers and another letter in the end (example X – 1234567 – B). Each NIE number is dedicated to one person and it is neither transferable nor does it expire.

Why it is important?

The Spanish NIE number is basically used as a code to serve people who don’t have Spanish Nationality. It is of essential for virtually every activity that requires your identification. Many people are not aware of the real importance of the NIE number. For example, your very first steps after moving to Spain, like opening a bank account and getting internet/phone contracts, will require a NIE.

The Spanish NIE number is important for those who have a professional or economic interest in Spain.

The form is very quick to complete and can be filled in by clicking here. You complete it then press the blue button at the end to get a copy you can print out and sign.

    • self-employed: a company ownership certificate or
    • persons with sufficient funds: proof that you can live in Spain without working or

Step 5: Go to the authorized office

You can apply for NIE number at police stations with a Oficina de Extranjeros (Foreigners Office).

#Useful tips:  Get there early, even with the appointment system, as they will only allow so many NIE applications in one day. It is possible you will have to wait in the queue for hours until your turn at the office, so bring something that can keep you occupied for example a book or a magazine.

Step 6: useful Spanish terms

Some simple Spanish phrases that you might need:

Hello! I would like to apply for NIE number = Hola ! Me gustaría obtener mi número de identidad de extranjero (NIE) .

Where can submit my NIE application? = ¿ Dónde puedo inscribirme?

I have an appointment to get my NIE = Tengo una cita para obtener mi número de identidad de extranjero (NIE).

Step 7: keep calm and wait for it

After submitting all the documents, a photocopy of the application, a paper indicating when the card is available (keep it safe, you will need to show it to them later when you pick up your NIE card) and your passport will be returned to you. Usually after two weeks the NIE card should be available to pick up, but the process can sometimes take as long as 6 weeks. So stay patient! Generally in this area they take 1 week. Some NIE number are now being giving on the same day and you are requested to come back at a certain time.

Apply for NIE number before you come to Spain

It is also possible to apply for Spanish NIE number before coming to Spain, either by asking the Spanish consulate in your country or using a specialised agency of which many are available online, and the fees vary as well. But since you have read our guide, getting it all on your own won’t be such a pain.

What happens if I lose my N.I.E.?

Your N.I.E. is your life time number so it does not have to be renewed but if you lose it a duplicate must be obtained and you have to apply again in person. The procedure is the same as for a new application. Keep the original document in a safe place and have copies for everyday use. It is seldom that the original is requested

If I change my surname do I have to change my N.I.E?

If your surname changes due to marriage or divorce the N.I.E. must be re-applied for presenting your new passport or I.D. document at the National Police office in your locality. You will retain the same number but a new, correct, document will be issued.

If I change my address in Spain do I have to change my N.I.E?

NO - it is not necessary to change your actual N.I.E. document at the National Police office.

This is my NIE experience.

My wife and I live in the UK but want to rent an apartment in Alicante City
as a holiday home. We got a contract emailed to us in UK two weeks ago for the flat we are after and were told we needed an NIE. I looked online and followed your guide to the letter.

I booked the Cita with the Ebanisteria in Alicante following your link. The
earliest available was for today at 10.35. I repeated the online application
for an appointment for my wife and she got the same appointment time albeit at a different counter. I completed the EX 15 and printed off a few copies.
I also completed and printed out the form 790. (Three pages were produced,
two identical copies and a third different version).

Once in Spain this week I took my form 790 into a bank- Banco Sabadell and paid 9.40 Euros and got it stamped. The bank kept one of the three pieces of paper I had previously printed. ( The 9.40 fee was automatically generated when I completed the form online. I think this fee may vary from region to region ).

Today we got to the Ebanisteria at about 8.30 am. There was a queue of
about 20 people. They let us all in just before 9am. In the entrance was a
computerised ticket machine into which I put my passport number. On screen it confirmed I had an appointment at 10.35 and I got a numbered ticket. I went into the waiting room and was called into the office soon after 9am- despite my appointment being 10.35am.

A bored policeman took my application forms and just the photo page of my photocopied passport- there was no need to photocopy the entire passport. He took a passport photo I had provided and told me to come back at 1pm that day and keep my ticket, which he stamped. He did not ask why I needed an NIE and so I did not show him my apartment contract or bank statements that I had brought with me.

My wifes experience was much the same except her bored policemen didnt even take her photo.

We returned before 1pm and sat around for a bit, not really knowing what to do. At 1.15pm as we had not been called in we just went into the offices
where we had seen the policeman earlier and sat behind a desk was one of the officers with all the new nie papers in front of him. I offered him my
previously stamped ticket and he simply handed over the paper with my new NIE on it and that was that.

Booking the appointment ahead of time online was clearly vital. Paying the fee on the 790 ahead of the appointment also clearly saved a lot of hassle.

Thanks very much for your guide, I am not sure if a turnaround of a few
hours is now usual practice but it has saved us a return flight and was
actually fairly straightforward.

Kind Regards,

Simon.

Do you have to live in the same province where you make the application? For example, I live in Alicante province and the online appointments system has a 6 week waiting list. But other provinces only have a week or two. I need the NIE within a month and I'don't mind traveling to get it.

Hi I have just made an appointment online to get my NIE and I have to wait until 22nd June! Just over 6 weeks to apply, is it possible to get a temporary NIE quicker as I'm guessing I won't be able to get a job until I have the NIE number? I was not planning on waiting that long to be able to start work or will employers take you on subject to NIE number being applied for? Thanks in advance for any help on this. James

Hi my NIE is out of date. do I have to go through the whole application again? Benidorm police said six weeks and had to apply on line. Can I go to Calpe police or other offices that will probably be quicker to get another certificate?

Your number itself will not be out of date that stays the same for your life time, it will just be the piece of paper that needs updating, but yes unfortunately you will need to make an appointment etc to do that x

Firstly what a great site you guys are running! So informative, we were stodd outside your shop today but didnt come in as we didnt know what to ask ?

So re the NIE can you clarify, do I/we need to have an address, job offer or funds to apply? If so, do you know how much they consider sufficient? I am a Military Veteran and currrently in receipt of a regular income.

Hi you should have popped into the office. You can use a Uk address but a obviously a Spanish one is better, funds should not be considered when applying for an NIE but that may just depend who you get on the desk at the time and what mood they are in. Income etc is relevant when applying for Residencia, you can also apply for your NIE from the Spanish Consulate back in the UK

Hello, can you please advise, I already have an nie appointment but because it's for 26/12/2018 I am finding it hard to find an interpreter. Can I go to the police station on my own or do I have to take an interpreter
Thank you

You can go on your own, all part of the Spanish Experience. some of the people on the desk are quite helpful, it all depends which one you get on the day, there is one the older gentleman who does not speak much English but the other two are fine. Its just a matter of handing your paperwork over really, but if you do feel more comfortable taking a translator contact this one see if they are available https://www.benidormseriously.com/user/isabel-diaz-sworn-translator/

I would like to thank everyone at benidorm seriously, me and my partner moved here in November, benidorm seriously booked our appointments at the police station, printed all the forms off for out nie, told us were to go to apply for our padron (which we got yesterday), I sat at my laptop yesterday afternoon and went through the website that you have on how to fill out the nie form, couldn't get my head round it at all, went the the office today and they filled the forms in for us, also printed out our form to pay for the nie, told us which bank to use to pay it, and where to get our photos done, we now have everything we need for our police visit, nie form, padron, photos, fee paid complete and stamped, I can relax now knowing everything is done, but it is only down to benidorm seriously that we can relax. A big massive thank you to you all, I'm so glad that you are here and also this Facebook page as well, we have had so much help from everyone on here and the information you all provide and the recommendations is truly great. Thank you once again. Xxxxx

Hello. I am going to be staying in benidorm for at least 6 months, probably longer to care for a sick relative. As they become more independent I will look for work to enable me to stay longer with them, but that won't be until they start to get well. I was going to apply for my number now, what would I put as my reason for wanting one. Social? Or professional? As I can't work straight away due to care that relative will need.
Reply | Reply with quote | Quote
0 # Tracy Ann 2019-01-21 14:33
You would be best putting social, as you are not in paid employment. You will also need to apply for Residencia if staying here for more then 90 days. this is very important with impending Brexit

Thank you very much. I'd best get cracking then as I've been here almost 3 months already. Thought I was only going to be here a couple of weeks, but that's not how it turned out. Thanks again.

I had a social security number, but I've lost it, and my NIE. I can reapply for NIE is there any way to retrieve my SS number please?
Reply | Reply with quote | Quote
0 # Tracy Ann 2019-04-27 12:32
If you have a SIP card (Health card) your SS number will be on that or if you are registered electronically and know your NIE you may be able to retrieve it that way and of course both numbers will be on any old pay slips.

If none of the above apply call into the SS office and see what they advise, they may be happy (fingers crossed) to retrieve it for you with just your name or you may need to wait until you have proof of NIE. It could just depend upon who you get on the day in the office and what mood they are in, good luck and let us know how you get on.

Yes you have to do the whole process again, sorry.
The Spanish themselves do not change their surname after marriage so be prepared for a few strange looks, it took me 4 attempts to get my residentia etc changed x
