This information for buying a car in Spain is correct as of April 2017 but may change without notice, also different areas have different requirements
The Buyer
The price for the same new car may vary in Spain from a dealer to another. Also, if you give your old car to pay the new one, you will find the price highly reduced, depending on your old car value.
The dealer might pay the registration fee, especially on a new, list price car or if you are paying cash.
Due to various government plans to reduce pollution, cars over ten years old may be taken in part exchange and qualify you for a discount.
In the event that the car model you have chosen is not available at the time of your request, you should fill in a purchase order for a new car. Pitfalls to avoid:
Once you are given your new vehicle, the dealer shall supply the following documents:
These are only general guidelines; Any other questions applicable to your individual case on buying a car in Spain should be directed to a Spanish Lawyer.
BUYING A SECOND HAND CAR
If you buy a second-hand car in Spain, whether privately or from a car dealer, you should be provided with the following documents:
Check the vehicle history before buying any car, as the vehicle may have past debts and the creditor is entitled to use the car as an asset for seizure.
Either the seller or buyer, depending on what both parties agreed, shall apply for a new registration certificate, in order to transfer the ownership of the vehicle (notificación de transferencia de vehículos), obtainable from the provincial traffic department. Both parties must sign this document.
The buyer must pay:
About the guarantee:
The seller is liable for the later possible imperfections of the vehicle, which could not be discovered by a non-expert car buyer. Private buyers may renounce this guarantee, however, the dealer is mandatory responsible for imperfections on the car.
BUYING A SPANISH CAR FROM THE UK
If you’ve seen an ex Spanish vehicle for sale in the UK or another European country, at first glance, it may appear to be both cheaper and more convenient, but, there are a few things to consider.
It is absolutely essential to find out if the vehicle is still "live" on the Spanish traffic system (de alta) or if it’s been properly taken off the Spanish system (de baja), especially if it’s now registered in another European country. This can be done with a vehicle check, using either of the following links:
https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/vehiculos/informe-de-vehiculo/
https://www.car-registrations-spain.com/vehicle-search.html
The vehicle check will determine which documents you will need and tell you if the vehicle has any administrative issues, that would prevent it being registered in your name, such as outstanding road tax, embargoes etc.
If the vehicle has been properly de-registered in Spain then you would need to apply to the DGT to rehabilitate the vehicle, once permission has been granted, you can then get the vehicle tested, but you must have a full year's insurance policy in place on the old Spanish registration number at the time of the test and the vehicle needs to be tested on the old Spanish Plates.. The ITV station also needs to order paperwork before the ITV test.
Once the vehicle has been tested, number plates need to be swapped back to the number plates that correspond with the country of current registration, whilst the vehicle is pending registration with the DGT.
If the car is still registered in Spain. It's quite often the case that an ex Spanish vehicle that has been registered in another country hasn't been properly de-registered in Spain. If this is the case with your vehicle you will need the ID docs of the previous owner to be able to register the vehicle in your name.
About the car insurance:
If you buy a second hand car you may subrogate (Subrogation, is the right for an insurer to legally pursue a third party that caused an insurance loss to the insured. This is done as a means of recovering the amount of the claim paid by the insurance carrier to the insured for the loss) The seller's car insurance, the insurance company shall be informed about this. Make sure that the sell is up to date on any payments, otherwise once the vehicle is transferred, you will be liable for any pending payments.
These are only general guidelines, other questions applicable to your individual case should be directed to a Spanish Lawyer.

UK to Spanish Clothing conversions - Sizes in Spain are in metric, but Spain uses a different system to some other European countries and tend to be 2cm more - so a size 12 in France would be a 40 but 42 in Spain and in Switzerland its a 38!
The problem is compounded by the fact that many shops stock clothes from a variety of countries so the sizes will be different.
The tables below are a general guide for you to use so that you can choose items which are approximately your size to try on!

Education in Spain, State or Private School - When looking at education in Spain, one problem many expat parents have is whether to enrol their children in a Spanish state school or one of the many options of private schools in Spain. Which Spanish education system should you choose?
Choosing a school in Spain
School is mandatory in Spain for children between the ages of six and 16. But should parents need to hand their children over earlier, there are nursery schools for children from as young as nine months, and most children attend preschool between the ages of three and six.
The first choice to make is whether you want your child to go to a Spanish state school or a private school, which includes bilingual and international schools. Figures show that the majority of expats send their children to state schools in Spain, an experience that allows the child to integrate fully in local life and (depending on how young they are when they start) be speaking the language fluently within a year.
But immersing a child in a foreign language from day one may put pressure on them, beyond all the ordinary strains associated with starting a new school. The difficulty increases as a child gets older, and the education level more difficult.
In contrast, an international school enables your child to ease their way into school in a foreign country yet in familiar surroundings, with smaller classes taught in their language. But their level of Spanish may not be any better than if they had studied it as a second language back home, and they may integrate less into Spanish culture.

State schools in Spain
Details on how to register for State School can be found here.
Spain's public schools have improved considerably in past years and the qualifications gained are valid if your child wants to study at a university elsewhere, such as the UK. However, in areas with large foreign communities such as the Costa Blanca, there can be a problem of foreign pupils flooding schools. The result is disrupted classes, inadequate teaching and worse exam results as teachers are unable to deal with so many non-Spanish speaking pupils.
Bear in mind, too, that if you send your child to a public school in, a proportion of classes may be in Valencian.
Another important thing to note is that the schools won’t be bilingual. You child will be completely taught in Spanish (or a regional language), with the exception of an English class as a second language for a few hours a week.
While the state school system in Spain has vastly improved, schools may still not be up to par with some private institutions and classes tend to be larger in the state system (up to around 30 children). However, that does not mean they aren’t any good. On the plus side, as they are non-fee paying, they are also considerably cheaper than private schools. Parents only have to pay for school supplies, books (although they might be expensive), extra curricular activities (such as sport, music and art ), or a small yearly fee (be sure to enquire about this as there are no set prices).
Education in Spain, State or Private School?
Since schooling is compulsory, within the state school system a lot more accommodations are made for non-Spanish speakers. For example, your child could be placed in a special, low enrolment classroom where he or she is then taught Spanish for non-native speakers.
Thus state schools can considerably aid a child's language learning, however, parents should note that complete immersion may not be for everyone, especially if the child is a lot older. A student will be made to repeat a year of school if they do not pass the standardised tests that are required at the end of every year.
There are no restrictions for foreign pupils to attend Spanish state schools. The first step is to register at your local town hall to get the document known as the empadronamiento, which shows you are a registered residence in that area. Check what your region's exact requirements are, but you will generally need to take originals and photocopies of your passport, proof of address (utility bills etc.) and a rental contract or deed.
If you do choose to enroll your child in a public school get ready for a long and arduous trip into Spanish bureaucracy. You or your child may be required to:
School Holidays in Spain
The academic year in Spain runs from mid-September to mid-June, with the main holidays at Christmas, Easter and the long summer break. Spanish schoolchildren have very long school holidays (vacaciones escolares) compared with those in many other countries. The school year is made up of three terms, each averaging around 11 weeks. Terms are fixed and are generally the same throughout the country, although they may be modified in autonomous regions to take account of local circumstances and special events (such as local fiestas).
Pupils transferring from primary to secondary school are sometimes given an additional two weeks’ summer holiday, which usually includes an ‘end of school’ trip (viaje de estudios) with fellow pupils. Schools are also closed on public holidays when they fall within term time.
School holiday dates are published by schools and local communities well in advance, thus allowing parents plenty of time to schedule family holidays. Normally, you aren’t permitted to withdraw a child from classes during the school term, except for visits to a doctor or dentist, when the teacher should be informed in advance.
Specific details for this area.
School times - From 09.00am to 17.00pm from October to May inclusive.
09.00am to 13.00 - June and September when the weather is hottest.
School Dinners
At lunch times pupils can either stay at school or return home. If they stay you have to pay for school dinners the price on average is 4.10€ or 4.20€ a day, (that is for a 4 course meal with a water and a piece of bread for that!!). The food is typically Spanish and the menus are worked out by nutritionists to be really healthy... they get a lot of fish, fruit and veg.....
Packed lunches are not permitted
School Buses
Generally transport is provided free if you can prove you live at least 2 Km from the school. If you live closer but still need the use of the school bus the fee is around 90€ per child per month.
School Books
Education is Free in State Schools but you have to pay for all text books etc the typical cost works out at around 200€ per child, per year.
Exams
There are 3 evaluations per year and children are required to get an average of 5 out of 10 to pass a subject. At the end of the school year, if a child fails two or more subjects then can repeat that school year.
Languages
There are two official languages in the Valancian area, Castillian and Valenciano
Schools in Benidorm - The following is a list of both private and state schools in Benidorm and nearby, with contact telephone numbers and addresses.
Bear in mind that the local state school is unlikely to have an English speaking telephone operator - although most have an English speaking member of staff as English is taught from an early age in the Spanish national curriculum. If you don't speak Spanish, it is probably best to visit the school to make an appointment face to face with an interpreter rather than try over the telephone.

Many people who buy a property in Spain want to make changes to it. Perhaps they would like an extension, a swimming pool or maybe just to improve the internal layout of their property. It can come as a surprise to discover that each of these home improvements requires a building permit. This guide will help to understand Spanish Building regulations.
The building permit comes in two forms. The ‘obra menor’ applies to minor works that you do such as refitting your kitchen or tiling your patio. The ‘obra mayor’ refers to major works such as building a swimming pool or extending your property.
For a major work you need an architect’s drawings and you will need to make your building permit application to your local town hall. The cost of the building permit will vary depending on the size of the works you are carrying out. You are also required to obtain permission for any building work from your Community of Owners. They will have to vote on this at an AGM.
Sanctions
It is unfortunate that people are often not informed correctly by the builders that they need a building permit and this can lead to consequences. If you do not have the correct building permit in place then you can be fined. It will not be the builder who receives this but you, as the owner. The town hall has inspectors who are responsible for checking up on renovations and home improvements in the area. If they detect a building site without a licence they will take disciplinary action.
The sanctions include substantial fines and you must pay these as well as legalising the works that have been carried out. There is no guarantee that you will be given a retrospective building permit. If, for example, the new works are outside urban planning regulations you could even be faced with a demolition order.
What you should do
If you should discover that you do not have the correct licences then it is important that you take immediate action to obtain them. A solicitor can do this on your behalf. They will also need to declare the works on your Title Deed. This enables the improvements you have made to be recognised when you come to sell your property.
Make sure that all significant changes to your property are recorded on your Title Deed including the building of a swimming pool. The building permit will act as proof of the changes you’ve made or you can use the architect’s drawing if the works have antiquity enough (For example in Valencian Region, if they were completed more than 15 years ago or 4 years ago for works done before the 20th August 2010.
It is particularly urgent that you check that you meet building permit requirements if you are intending to sell your property. A solicitor working on behalf of the purchaser will check to make sure that all the paperwork is in order. If renovations have taken place without it being licensed then it will be down to you to rectify this situation. A frustrating hold up in a sale that could mean you lose your buyer altogether.
If you are concerned that your property may have unlicensed home improvements then we suggest you review your building work against the questions below and approach a solicitor who will be able to help you:
Do your title deeds reflect the current state of your property?
Did you obtain the necessary building permit?
Did you notify the Catastro of the work being carried out?
Did you get permission from the community of owners? (if applicable)
Of course, if all the answers to these questions are ‘yes’ then you should feel pleased that you are evidently building permit compliant and can enjoy your extension, swimming pool or refurbishment without worrying about the consequences.
This information if for guidance only please always consult a solicitor for up to the minute advice on new regulations etc
