Local Mayor attacked when defending robbery victim in Benidorm

The mayor of Callosa d’en Sarrià, Andrés Molina, was wounded yesterday in Benidorm when he came to the aid of a Spanish tourist who was being attacked by a thief.  The thief initially escaped after throwing the mayor to the ground, he was imprisoned by nearby National Police.

The events took place at mid-day yesterday on Avenida Alfonso Puchades, at the intersection with Avenida de Beniardá (old town).  The 62 year-old woman was crossing  the road at a pedestrian crossing when she noticed someone opening her backpack. The woman turned and saw a man carrying her wallet in his hand. The thief tried to leave and the woman began to scream for help. The mayor of Callosa, who was nearby, did not think twice and reacted quickly by holding the thief so he would not leave and moments later the victim’s husband approached.

The mayor struggled with the thief trying to detain him but was tripped up in the struggle they all fell to the ground and the thief was able to escape and flee.  Andrés Molina was suffered an head injury when his head hit the ground

The victims purse was recovered and the 47 year old thief arrested, where he remains detained at Benidorm Police station.
