The Spanish Fiestas in November
Benidorm honours its two patron saints, the Virgen del Sufragio and San Jaime apostle, with the annual "Fiestas Patronales" local fiestas. The streets are transformed for the entire event with floral decorations, lively musicians, open-air theatre, firework displays and religious parades.
The fiesta dates back to March 1740 when a boat appeared just off the Benidorm coast, dragged in by a violent storm. The boat was burned to prevent an epidemic, but some local boys found the image of the Virgin in the rubble and took here to the church, where later a chapel was built. This story forms a large part of the November fiesta and each year the story is staged on Poniente beach on the Saturday around 17.00.
Benidorm Fiestas 2020 start Friday 6th November and end officially on Wednesday 11th November with a spectacular Firework display.
During EVER fiesta you will see Mascletas listed on the schedules, these are loud, thunderous fire crackers, They are fired randomly, particularly during the day. They are very very loud and not designed to see as such as they are not really pretty but are more to stimulate the body through rhythmic sounds and vibrations.
On Thursday 12th November there will be the "British fancy dress day" which starts around mid day on the Calle Gerona & British square. The tradition started over 20 years ago when Monolo from Sinatras Cabaret Bar offered a free drink to anyone who dressed up, this event now gets more and more popular each year with 1000´s attending, most in fancy dress.
