Road accident in Benidorm - 25-year-old British man hit by a motorcycle

Earlier today a 25 year old British tourist ignored a red light, and whilst crossing the road was hit by a motorcycle who was unable to avoid him.

The accident took place at the intersection between Avenida del Mediterráneo and Avenida Almeria in the Rincon de Loix at around 17:30.   The tourist, who apparently was with a group of friends, who according to eye witnesses attempted to stop him crossing whilst the red light was showing.

As a result of this accident, the British tourist, suffered several bruises and a severe head trauma, the medical team treated him at the scene of the accident and he was later transferred by helicopter to the Doctor Balmis General Hospital in Alicante..

The 42-year-old driver of the motorcycle also suffered serious injuries, although police sources have confirmed that his life is not in danger.

Benidorm Local Police have taken charge of the investigation to determine the speed at which the motorcycle was circulating (The speed limit in this area is 30 kilometers per hour) and other matters related to the accident.

Please remember that a RED light means DO NOT CROSS, Flashing amber lights also mean DO NOT START TO CROSS if you are not already on the crossing.

Did you know - You could get a fine of 80€ or more, for crossing the road in the wrong place.  Spanish Laws state that a crossing must be used if you are within 50 metres of one. The fine also applies if you are caught crossing during the red light.

Cyclists also need to remember - To cross a pedestrian crossing, it is mandatory to get off the bike and push it.  Crossing a pedestrian crossing without getting off the bike can result in a €200 fine.
