Facilities and Walking Route

There are now several seating areas and information boards near the Cross. The walking route is well-lit with street lighting installed along the road.

If travelling from Benidorm’s New Town, a taxi costs around €6, but note:

Q: Will a taxi take me all the way to the Cross?
A: No, taxis can only take you to the end of the access road. The Cross itself is located at the top of the mountain, accessed via steep steps, and may not be suitable for those with walking difficulties. However, the views from the end of the road remain fantastic.

You can also continue your walk across the mountain towards Albir Lighthouse, enjoying more panoramic views along the way.

Tip: Bring water and snacks, as there are no services at La Cruz itself.

The Cross Benidorm, La Cruz

History of La Cruz (Benidorm Cross)

The first Cross on top of Sierra Helada was erected in 1961. It was a wooden cross carried on the shoulders of the entire village, starting from San Jaime Church in Benidorm Old Town.

That day became known as the “Day of Forgiveness”, part of a mission by local Catholic monks to prove that Benidorm had not lost its “soul” despite the arrival of “frivolous” bikini-wearing tourists. At the time, wearing bikinis was seen as sinful by the church, despite Franco having granted permission for their use on Spanish beaches. In fact, just two years earlier, the Bishop of Orihuela, Alicante threatened then-Mayor Pedro Zaragoza with signs declaring residents would go to hell for allowing such attire.

Today, visitors will see a large metal Cross erected in 1975, made from parts of old railway tracks, standing as a symbolic monument overlooking Benidorm.
