The excavation and musealisation (putting or keeping something in a museum) of the Castell de Benidorm is one step closer to being a reality. The Department of Historical Heritage is going to send the Ministry of Culture the project of archaeological intervention and construction of the recovery and enhancement of this emblematic area of the tourist capital after the Local Government Board approved this morning.

The project is valued at 1,210,000 euros and financed with 500,000 euros of European funds through the line of aid for the protection or recovery of the Valencian cultural heritage of the ERDF Operational Program 2014-2020.

The councilor of Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer, explained that “the goal of this project is the enhancement of our Castell and obtaining the qualification of Cultural Interest (BIC), adding a greater cultural attraction to an enclave that at the moment is all an icon and a tourist reference of Benidorm “. Pellicer has detailed “this project will allow us to witness the history of the city and value the remains of the Castell that gave rise to the current Benidorm.”

For this, it is necessary to discover the remains under the pavement of the squares, investigate and document them; stabilize and secure the slopes; protect the structural elements;  maintaining the pedestrian use of the enclosure so that it is accessible at least visually.

Pellicer has indicated that it is a project “very powerful and ambitious, since to date the only archaeological interventions have been made in very limited areas, while now what we propose is a comprehensive project on the entire perimeter that could occupy the fortification original and all the constructions that accompanied it “. “And all this is going to be carried out,” she clarified, “without affecting the buildings in the area and keeping the visitors going and the access to the viewpoint.”

The project of excavation will be done in four stages –  The first is the cleaning and clearing of the area in which the remains of the wall are located, on the side of Punta Canfali that coincides with the squares of Castell and Castelar.

The second – the most important, is the excavation of the Plaça del Castell, where “the oldest levels of the defensive complex” would be located, based on the historical documentation and the archaeological intervention made in 1993. This action will be carried out in two phases to allow at all times access to the square and the viewpoint.

The third –  archaeological surveys have been planned in the Santa Ana and Castelar squares and in the viewpoint located further south, with the aim of confirming or ruling out the presence of remains of towers and other constructions. The last line of action focuses on the consolidation of the slopes of Punta Canfali.

The mayor has remarked that “the archaeological exhumations made in 1993 and 2014 predict that these proposed actions will allow us to locate interesting remains from the historical and heritage point of view, although we do not know what state they are in, as we must not forget that the documentation indicates that the fortification was destroyed by cannon fire 200 years ago and that the ruins have been exposed to environmental and human deterioration for more than a century. ”

It will be, therefore, the state and importance of these remains that will determine the total or partial musealisation of the enclave.

The Councilor for Historical Heritage has indicated that “we want the citizens to participate in this project and that is why we are going to organize the work in such a way that, through guided visits, interested persons can contemplate the main excavation area and learn about the actions what they are doing and how they evolve. ”

Together with the project, the City will send to Conselleria the specifications that will govern the public tender for the selection of the company that will be responsible for the work, which have a deadline of three months.
