Lots of these creatures are being washed up on local beaches, brought in by the prevailing winds. They are appearing in thousands in some places. Some media sources are wrongly claiming that they are small versions of the feared "Portuguese men of war"...They are NOT...They are something known commonly as "purple sailors," and are pretty harmless, although there are some people that might get an allergic reaction to them. Strandings of them happen every year, but due to the weather conditions at the moment, there are more than normal turning up.
