Spanish directorThe fabulous castle of Santa Barbara which overlooks Alicante city, is once again to be converted into a film set for a short time. Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar will be overseeing the filming of "El cautivo," a film which revolves around the period of captivity of Miguel de Cervantes, during his period of captivity in Algeria. As such, the castle will be CLOSED to the public between May 8th to the 16th. The castle is no stranger to film sets, having been used in the past for productions such as "Camino a Belén", with Antonio Banderas, Asterix and Obelix and even Drácula against Frankenstein in the 70´s!!  More ...

While the rest of Spain recorded average temperatures that were 1.9c above average, our province recorded temperatures that were 2.3c above the normal. The lack of rain was evident, with the only significant day in three months occurring on January 19th, with a tiny bit on February 8th and 9th. They give a percentage chance of between 50% and 70% that this summer will be one of the hottest ever registered, and a percentage chance of 70% to 100% that it will be hotter than average with regard to temperatures. Since then they have been testing the sea water, water in the foot washers, and even the sand itself for the presence of any harmful bacteria. In the high season months they test weekly, in low season every 15 days, right through the year. They have a total of nine test points, across Benidorm's five beaches. The good news is that even in this month of August, with packed beaches, the water quality is still within the range classed as "Excellent".   More ...

    • Most of us are aware of how beautifully kept the beaches of Benidorm are, but did you know that Benidorm is actually one of the few towns in theMost of us are aware of how beautifully kept the beaches of Benidorm are, but did you know that Benidorm is actually one of the few towns in the country that keeps a beach cleaning team on 365 days a year! In low season such as now, there are 20 operatives that either work overnight from 22.30 until 04.50, or with manual collection emptying bins etc from 07.00 to 13.30. This number increases to 28 workers in high season.

      Last year a massive 540 tons of rubbish of various sorts was collected from the beaches.

      The weed that is washed up in the winter months is left on purpose, as it forms a protective barrier for the sands against the bigger waves at this time of the year

    • Out of the 50 provinces in Spain, the Alicante province (which includes Benidorm) was destination "numero uno" for Spanish tourists last August 2023!
      Out of the 50 provinces in Spain, the Alicante province (which includes Benidorm) was destination "numero uno" for Spanish tourists last August 2023!

      The national institute of statistics has revealed that 1.243.149 Spanish tourists chose our province for their "staycations", ahead of other favourite places like Madrid, Cadiz and Malaga.
