Marc Bolan / T Rex. Probably the most influential of them all on my music career.

As a big fan of Glam Rock, this is my opinion of the rest, forMarc Bolan / T Rex. Probably the most influential of them all on my music career.

As a big fan of Glam Rock, this is my opinion of the rest, for what it's worth.

Bay City Rollers: A front to showcase the writing talents of Martin / Coulter. Coulter had already established himself in that field with songs like Congratulations and Puppet on a string for the Eurovision song contest. He has since gone on to write numerous songs of varying genres, such as the Ireland's Call for the Rugby team as an alternative to the Irish National anthem to avoid offence to the Northern Irish players.

Showaddywaddy: A fun band reliving the Rock and Roll era. Nothing original, but fabulous entertainment. Also had the pleasure of working with them. As much fun off stage as on it.

Sweet: A band misplaced. They became stars based on the successful combination of the time with Micky Most producing songs written by Chinn/Chapman. Listen to any of their albums, and you will soon discover their first love was hard rock. Not sure they would have been as successful though if they had competed in that genre, with bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

Roy Wood and Wizard. On hindsight Roy Wood probably peaked in the 60's with the Move. A founder member of ELO who eventually gained great success, he left them to form Wizzard. Most people only remember the Christmas hit. Other than that he might have been better off to stick with Jeff Lynne and ELO

David Cassidy: He had the looks, the voice and the ability to act. At one time the highest paid entertainer in the world. Just couldn't control his own demons. Waste of a career really.

Mud. An above average pub band made good, again with the help of the Most/Chinn/Chapman combination. Very entertaining with a lead singer who could create the Elvis sound at will, but nothing that would ever make them worldwide stars. I'm still happy to watch their old videos and smile though.

Slade: I would add a similar description to that of Mud except for Noddy. What a voice! They also wrote their own music, some of which has survived the test of time. It's still not Christmas until Noddy says it is.

David Essex: When you look like that, there's not much more talent needed. But he could sing, act and was a talented drummer as well who wrote his own songs. PS his singing abilities extend far beyond the voice he typically used for his pop image.

Leo Sayer: Very underrated. A top notch song writer who's songs have been covered by names like Roger Daltrey, Celine Dion and others. A unique voice, and having seen him perform live, his show ranks as one of the most enjoyable I have attended.

The Osmonds: For me this is THE most underacted act of the era. As a 14 year old boy, it didn't dare admit I was a fan. But listen to Crazy Horses. One of the best rock songs ever written, while being passed of as bubble pop by the press at the time. Admittedly they pinched a little from Elvis for dress sense and the numerous Black "boy bands" for performance style, but they where also talented songwriters and musicians. One of the first bands to buy into the concept created by the Beatles that an album should stand on it's own merit and not be simply a collection of songs made up of the singles and the songs that were not enough to be put on a single. Listen to their album "the Plan". Still a good listen in 2026. And finally. None of the ego's associated with stardom. Always happy not just to step aside but to assist and boost the careers of their fellow siblings. A tight family unit, at least on a professional level.

      T. Rex. I'm bias. As a young kid, I idolised Marc Bolan, copied the hairstyle and still love to listen to his music to this day. By the time of his death his career did seem to be in decline, but who knows what have been still to come. RIP Marc

10CC. This was a marriage of convenience. Four Guys with very different ideas who got together to pool their talents, get noticed, and then go their separate ways when people would be ready to pay attention. Boy, did that work and worked well. Their hits can still be listened to today and still sound fresh. Individually I wouldn't place any one of them above some of the names I have mentioned above, but the sum of the parts stand out above most bands of the era. All four, songwriters, musicians, singers and at least two of which proved to be top video producers during the video era of the 80's. Talent x 4 = David Cox is right.

Seen them 8 times over the years and actually met Phil Lynott in Belfast once, where I interviewed him for hospital radio. He was with Grand Slam by then. I was at this concert in 1981. U2 only third on the bill after Thin Lizzy and Hazel O'Connor, based on the running order, although the poster suggests otherwise. Not a bad line up for £8 per ticket.   More ...

Only bettered by David Coverdale.
I also had the privilege of seeing Rory Gallagher live and watching him play was absolutely spellbinding.
ELO was probably the overall best concert that I ever attended during their Out of the blue tour.
Another great experience that I had was having a pint with Brian Johnson in Dunston Working man's club in Newcastle. The most unassuming rock star you could ever wish to meet🍻

David Cox Like I said, we have very similar tastes in music. The dual harmonised lead guitar was probably popularised most by Lizzy, but I doubt ifDavid Cox Like I said, we have very similar tastes in music. The dual harmonised lead guitar was probably popularised most by Lizzy, but I doubt if they where the first. I'm fairly sure both Wishbone Ash (seen them too) and the Allman Brothers Band were doing it when Lizzy were still working with a single guitarist in the early 70's. I also had the pleasure of performing with the Eric Bell band but that was years after his days with Thin Lizzy. I also once lent Brian Robertson a guitar lead. The disappointment was he never brought it back, so no souvenir. Anyway, back to dual lead. I think the idea was first developed by Les Paul (after whom the Gibson Les Paul guitar was named). He was using that sound in his recordings by double tracking, but obviously would not have been able to do it live on his own.

I agree with Phil Lynott's abilities as a front man. Although the best I have seen has to be Bruce Springsteen. For me nothing comes close to a Bruce Springsteen performance and that includes having seen Freddie Mercury with Queen. I rate Springsteen as the number 1 performer I ever watched live by far. Although I was never a fan of the music of U2, Bono is also up there for his ability to work a crowd.

I never seen Coverdale live, so can't comment there but I do consider him the best voice of the Rock genre. His rendition of the old Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac classic, "Need your love so bad", still makes the hairs stand on my neck.

I was too young to appreciate Rory Gallagher in his prime, Probably still stuck in Glam Rock then, but his videos on Youtube tell me I missed something special. Tracy and I have visited his statue in Ballyshannon. A favourite area of mine growing up.

One area we disagree is ELO. I never got into them. Yes there was a lot of talent, but for me nothing ever jumped out and grabbed me.

Your comment on Brian Johnson doesn't surprise me. I watched the documentaries he made with Mark Knopfler and both came across very humble guys in those. Mark Knopfler for me is the number 1 guitarist, but AC/DC were always a little too heavy for my taste. Some of their songs though just cannot be ignored.
