Train Service, Alicante to Denia - Routes, Prices and General Information
Train Service Alicante to Denia - One of the reasons that people like to come to Benidorm is that there is always so much to do, but if you feel the need to “stretch your wings” a little, and explore the surrounding area nothing could be easier thanks to the local train services.
The trains also known as trams are operated by the local company FGV and have nothing to do with the Spanish Railway (RENFE)
Free Sundays
During the Sundays in May, June and July, the Generalitat has announced that the service on all lines of the TRAM of Alicante will be free.
These measures will be applied from 6 a.m. on Sunday until 11:59 p.m.
Due to the great reception of this initiative and as a preventive measure, access to bicycles and scooters is temporarily restricted on Sundays in zone A of the TRAM of Alicante in June and July.
Benidorm’s train station is located at the top of Avenida de Beniardá and, although a good 15-20 minutes walk inland from the beach, is easily accessed from the tourist side of town on bus number 1 for the standard fare of 1.55€ each way.
New Benidorm Intermodal Stop - Located next to the Benidorm bus station, trains will cease to stop at Disco Benidorm and will now stop at Benidorm Intermodal. Certain L1 trains will continue their journey from the BENIDORM station to the Benidorm Intermodal station.
When using the Tram Alicante website you can select the stop of origin and destination, the date and the time range in which you want to travel.
Once the fields have been filled in, the approximate duration and the ticket that will be necessary to complete the journey will be indicated, according to the area to which you want to travel. it will also tell you if it is necessary to carry out any transfers from one line to another.
NOTICES
L9: On Wednesday, July 13th, the train service on the Teulada - Gata section is restored. Check the new schedules of the Benidorm – Dénia section.
L9: The journey between Teulada-Dénia takes place by bus until Tuesday, July 12th included. From the 13th the bus journey takes place between Gata-Dénia.

It is recommended not to travel in the busiest hours: from 7 to 9 and from 14 to 15 h.
The use of a mask is compulsory in public transport
When you are located on the platform, waiting for the arrival of the train or tram, you must occupy the empty spaces along its entire length to maintain maximum separation from other people.
Inside trains and trams, passengers must distribute themselves through the empty spaces along the entire length of the unit, keeping the safety distance from other users and leaving free access for drivers to the cabins.
The purchase of transport tickets in the stations will be made exclusively on automatic vending machines.
It is also recommended to avoid , as far as possible, sitting in front of another traveller , not occupying the central corridor to allow free interior movement to get on or off the train or tram, and washing your hands and exposed areas after using the transport service, although FGV vehicles and facilities are disinfected regularly.

The trams to Alicante (line 1) leave every half hour starting at 06.35 with the journey taking around 75 minutes. The last tram leaves Alicante to return to Benidorm at 22.11.
The trams on line 1 do not stop at any of the stations between El Campello and Lucentum. If you would like to get off at any of these stations along the beach you need to change at El Campello onto line 3.
And the good news it’s cheap! Return tickets whether to Denia or Alicante, are the same price of just 6.40€ return.

Line 1: Luceros (Alicante) - Benidorm
The line 1 of the TRAM connects the central Plaza de Los Luceros with Benidorm. The total length of the route is 43 km. In this line the 4100 units circulate, they are trains that reach 100km / h and that combine sections in tram regime and others with railway platform. In Benidorm there is a link with the L9 line with final destination Denia.
The Alicante - Benidorm connection has a total of 20 intermediate stations. From Luceros you reach El Campello quite quickly and from there numerous stops occur before arriving in Benidorm.
The connection Benidorm - Alicante is one of the most used transport methods. From the Benidorm stop located at Crta. Estació , the tram of line 1 leaves every half hour approximately. The full tour until arriving in Alicante lasts approximately one hour and is done along the coast, overlooking the beach during much of the trip.
There are 4 tram stations in Alicante and which one you get off at depends what you want to do.
SANGUETA - the best station if you want to go to the beach, marina and Esplanada. It is about 10 minutes walk along by the beach. The branch line (4L) down to the beach at Puerta del Mar was closed down in 2013 so Sangueta is now the nearest station to the beach.
MARQ-CASTILLO if you want to go to Castillo Santa Barbara. This is also the stop to get off to visit the acclaimed archaeological museum - a great place to visit on a wet day!
MERCADO for the area around the indoor market or a walk down the Rambla to Esplanada.
LUCEROS - the end of the line (so no worry about missing your stop) - is best for shopping etc. This is right in the centre of the city.
Train service Alicante to Denia
Line 2: Luceros (Alicante) - Sant Vicent del Raspeig
The line 2 TRAM is the most commonly used alicantinos and connects the Plaza de los Luceros the center of San Vicent del Raspeig line. It travels a total of 9 km. It completes in about 25 minutes. The step frequencies are approximately 8 minutes at rush hour. The trains are 4200 units, designed to circulate in urban environments, which reach 70 km / h.
On its way it passes through the Market, the Marq, the Pla neighborhood, the general hospital, Virgen del Remedio, Ciudad Jardín and Universidad.
Line 3: Luceros (Alicante) - El Campello
The line 3 TRAM connects Alicante with El Campello in a path that runs parallel to the coast, passing through San Juan and Muchavista. The route has 14.5 km. They are completed in about 25 minutes. It has a frequency of 20 minutes at rush hour and 30 minutes.
Line 4: Luceros (Alicante) - San Juan Beach
The Line 4 of the TRAM connects the city center with the districts of the albufereta, Barrio de las Huertas and Playa San Juan. The trains are 4200 units, since it is an entirely urban route line. Its passing frequency is about 30 minutes.
Line 5: Puerta del Mar - Plaza de La Coruña
TRAM Line 5 connects the waterfront of the city of Alicante, with Albufereta Beach, San Juan Beach and Cabo de las Huertas. It has its stop in front of Playa del Postiguet, at Puerta del Mar.
This new line has a connection at the Lucentum stop with L1 and L3, and at Sangueta stop with L1, L3 and L4.
In principle it will work from June to October, as a reinforcement to Line 4 during the summer period. Depending on the demand and use during these summer months the rest of the year will last.
Line 9: Benidorm - Denia
The line 9 connects Benidorm with the capital of Alta, Denia Marina. Its frequency is one train every hour.
Things to note:
Inside the tram are illuminated signs which indicate the next stop, there is usually also a verbal announcement, a good chance to improve your pronunciation of Spanish towns.
When on the tram, signal to the driver you wish the tram to stop at the next stop - Press the button on the door - note the button and a sign in the carriage illuminate when this has been done.
Pressing the same button will open the doors when the tram has stopped.
On the tram - no smoking.
Do not travel without a shirt on.
Animals - It is not allowed to travel with animals, except:. Assistance dogs for people with disabilities or with their training instructors. Dogs accompanying the security forces. Small pets in cages or carriers.
You can buy your return ticket at Benidorm station ticket office. There are machines on the trams but they are not very easy to understand. There is an on the spot fine of €50 for not having a ticket.
The single ticket is for immediate use. You must validate it within 30 minutes from the moment of purchase.
You cannot use the “transfer” option to make a trip in the opposite direction with the same ticket.
It is important to retain your tram ticket for the duration of your journey. You will need to scan it at the end of our journey to exit the turnstiles at Alicante Luceros, Mercado or MARQ stations.

15th March New Zones planned - The new zonal distribution allows to move from six to three zones and is working in a coordinated way to expand the TAM zone

The new tariff regulation includes a simplification of the zonal distribution of the TRAM d'Alacant by moving from the current six zones to three zones, plus two inter-county transition areas to avoid the rigidity of the zonical borders.
Currently, the six existing tariff zones give place to 21 possible zonal combinations and six different tariffs, depending on the number of areas traveled on a ferry. With the modification proposed, the three areas would correspond to the three districts for which the TRAM d'Alicant is circulating: L'Alacantí, Marina Baixa and Marina Alta.
With the new distribution of the TRAM d'Alacant the Zone A would cover the stops located in the municipal terms of Alicant, Sant Vicent del Raspeig and El Campello, to which the future expansion of the network would be added in the municipalities of Sant Jo An and Mutxamel.
However, until the expansion of the TAM area is completed, through the agreement with the other administrations involved, the stops of Amerador, Coveta Fumá, Cala Pitres and Venta Lanuza, belonging to the municipal term of El Campello, p they will remain integrated in Zone B.
Zone B would understand the stops of the municipalities of La Vila-joiosa, Benidorm, L'Alfàs del Pi and Altea, while Zone C would be integrated by the municipalities of Calp, Teulada, Gata de Gorgos, Benissa and Dénia.
Another novelty that presents the new structure is the inclusion of two inter-district transitions, which are established between Pla Barraques and Costera Pastor, in the south, and between Altea and Benissa in the north. Travels that take place between stops of each of these sections would have consideration for traveling made in a single area.
In the proposed model, there are only 6 possible zonal combinations depending on the trip made and, only three applicable fares: of one, two or three areas in which the 10 travel bonus will cost 8 euros, 12 euros and 20 euros, respectively very much.
Examples by municipalities
With the new zonal plan and the new fares that have been approved by the FGV Board of Directors and that will apply from the summer, for example, a person who wants to travel from the Lucentum stop in Alicante, to Benidorm or whatever to make a journey from El Albir to Dénia, it will start moving by two areas, instead of the current three. This will mean a 42% discount of the price of the Bonus 10, which will go from €21 to €12.
People wanting to travel from Sant Vicent del Raspeig to Altea will travel through the four current areas to travel for two. This will give them a 55% discount starting summer; and they will go from paying €27.20 to €12.
Travel between Gata de Gorgos and Calp will cost, starting in the summer, 42% less, taking as a reference Bono 10, as they will move through one area and not the two current areas. Similarly, people who want to move from Dénia to Benidorm or viceversa will also see how the areas they move are reduced, which will cost them a savings of 42%.
Ultimately, there will also be areas that will benefit from a drop in prices, although in the future they will pass through the same number of areas. For example, the neighbours of El Campello who want to move to Hospital Vila will continue to pay two areas, but the price of the Bonus 10 of two areas will go from 14 euros to 12 euros.

Rules for travelling in a taxi - Children are permitted to travel in the rear of a taxi without a child seat as long as the taxi is only driving around urban areas, so driving from the airport a child seat would be required, you can order these when booking your transfer.
In a vehicle with more than 9 seats - If a vehicle has more than 9 passenger seats the driver is required to inform those travelling that it is a legal requirement to fasten your seat belt. Child seats are not normally required as they do not fit on the coach seats with over the lap seat belts.
When booking your transfers quite often it will ask for the ages of the children or if there is no separate box use the "Special Requirements" box normally available to state children´s ages.

The laws for all taxi/private hire companies in Spain are extremely strict. Please be aware that there are numerous illegal companies with websites and advertising on Facebook as legitimate taxi/transfer businesses. There are also apartment owners & letting agencies offering cheap transfers, these are also illegal.
Alicante Airport, Pirates In Arrivals?
Alicante Airport strictly controls the arrivals area to weed out illegal transport pirates. Only legal companies are permitted into the airport arrivals area. Your driver will be visibly holding an AENA card which will have the name of the lead passenger on. This is a mandatory procedure highlighted by AENA, which is the Spain’s Airport Governing body. As the article opposite highlights, Spanish police have begun clamping down on illegal transport companies so please don’t fall into this trap. Vehicles will now regularly checked for Tarjeta de Transporte and if your driver can not produce this documentation, the vehicle will be impounded, you will be out of pocket and could receive a fine for allowing your self to be carried in an uninsured vehicle, We come across this story all too frequently so please avoid this horror story and book with a professional licensed company such as the ones listed above.
Alicante Airport is patrolled continuously by the Guardia Civil (Police) & government inspectors looking for illegal touts. If a transfer company asks to meet you anywhere apart from the designated area in the arrivals terminal, they will be illegal, (even if they use the excuse that this is due to building work), their vehicles will also not be insured for passenger liability cover. You should remember that if stopped by the Guardia Civil (Police) the vehicle would be confiscated immediately leaving you stranded. A vehicle that is licensed will be SP (ServicioPublico) plated by the Spanish.
Remember:
1. Without a permit, it is illegal to offer a taxi service in Spain. If in doubt before booking ask to see the companies - Tourist number which is required for shuttle services and also Agencia de Viajes Mayorista / Minorista (Travel agency number) both of these should be readily available, if in doubt do not book.
2. Insurance is another important factor as you cannot obtain cover for the transportation of passengers without a legal permit.
If they say they paid or if the owner or Villa’s give free transport, This is still illegal.
3. Without the necessary insurance cover a passenger is also running the risk in the case of an accident as they could not hope to be compensated or have Hospital bills paid for,
4. Any unfortunate passengers caught up in the process can find themselves dumped on the road with their luggage if the police stop and seize the vehicle along with a €300 Fine.
2. BUS SERVICE - PLEASE NOTE SERVICES MAY BE RESTRICTED DUE TO COVID 19
ALSA BUS - This does not run 24/7 - The first bus currently leaves the airport at 08.00 and the last leaving at 19.00 (times change for summer). 9.80€ one way (sometimes there are discounts for online purchases).
There are only 2 drop off points the Bus Station (45 minutes) and El Centro at the bottom of the Avenida Europa (55 minutes), you would then have to walk or take a further taxi to your destination. Tickets can be purchased at Self services ticket machines,, laCaixa cashpoint machines, ALSA sales points - On board the bus, on line.
Where to find the bus at the airport - Please note the Bus Stop is now back in its original location on floor 2. The bus is NOT numbered but clearly states BENIDORM on the front.

3. STANDARD TAXI
There are always plenty of taxis at the airport, as you the exit the terminal you will find a Taxi stop. A taxi that will take about 45 minutes into Benidorm. A standard legal registered taxi will cost between 75-93€ depending upon the time of the day/night, ask the driver to confirm the price before departing. Details HERE
4. CAR HIRE
If you prefer to have a vehicle for the duration of your stay, you can rent a car to get from the airport to Benidorm and then you will have independence to go where and when you wish, it also gives you the opportunity to visit the surrounding area something we highly recommend. You will find lots of information of places to visit in this section of our website - THE SURROUNDING AREA.
At your arrival you will find counters of the main rental companies, although they usually offer better offers for reservations in advance on the Internet.

Benidorm Local Bus Prices and Information - Local transport links are very good here in Benidorm and many of the local towns and villages can easily be visited by bus. Standard ticket price for local buses is 1.55pp for however many stops be it one or the full circuit.

Increased services for lines 2 and 10 from June 1st: Line 2: from 09.45 to 13.00 hrs (every 15 minutes) Line 10: from 10.00 to 13.00 hrs (every 15 minutes)
April 19th - lines 06-12-18-24 and 31 are currently un serviced.
You have to wave down a bus at the stop you are waiting at and press the stop button to ensure the bus stops at your desired stop.
The drivers prefer change; some have even refused to take notes, (even 5 euros) take the ticket from the machine after the driver has printed it. The ticket will often not make much sense, either in time or details about the stop, but keep it with you just in case you need to produce it.
When you approach your destination, push one of the buttons located along the length of the bus and then exit using the middle doors.
Avanza is taking care of its safety by disinfecting all buses, and remember that according to current legislation, the use of a mask is mandatory to use public transport.

The idea of these road trips is to discover the real Spain, therefore, we always set the Sat Nav to avoid ALL Motorways and Toll Roads, by doing this you never quite know what you are going to come across and we have found so many wonderful surprises on our previous journeys.

Road Trip 2020, Spain and Portugal
Only our first nights accommodation is booked before hand, after that, decisions are made on where the next stop will be, decided by price of accommodation and driving distance, one of the joys of this type of holiday is you are never sure where you will end up, which makes ever day the start of a new holiday.
This year we travelled a total of 2299km and stayed in 10 different places.

Day 1 - 25th July Benidorm to Murcia. Journey time 2hrs 30 mins 144km
Leaving Benidorm behind, where the temperature was a hot 32ºc we headed towards Murcia and the temperature began to steadily rise until reaching a whopping 46.5ºc, now it is hard to explain just how hot that feels but imagine stepping into a furnace, that just about sums it up, you can almost feel yourself sizzle.
Feeling peckish we stopped for a bite to eat at what must be one of the most expensive service stations in Spain (Cafestore), normally we enjoy the road side cafes and service stations as they are good value, but this was the exception to the rule, 2 cans of drink, one Russian salad, 1 tomato and cheese salad and 1 Flamenquín (which is an is an Andalusian dish made with slices of serrano jamon wrapped in pieces of pork loin, coated in batter, and deep-fried) which was served with a few potatoes cost 31€, in Benidorm we could have had a gourmet meal for that.
Murcia is a city situated in the South East of Spain and has been the capital and most populous city of the autonomous community in the Region of Murcia since 1833, the city itself dates back to 825AD Having lived in Benidorm for quite a few years and visited many places in this region, we have never actually visited the city itself.
The main things to see here seem to be the Cathedral de Santa Maria, the medieval bridge and the bull ring, although it was really too hot to wander around to much, we did manage to visit all of the above, but I am sure there is a lot more places to visit.
Venturing out in the evening, it was surprising how quiet everywhere was and even at 20.00, many places still seemed to be closed, we are not sure if this is normal or just that most sensible people choose not to venture out in the heat.
Cathedral de Santa Maria - Construction for this Baroque style cathedral began in 1394 over the remains of an old Arabic mosque. The construction of the tower was started in 1511 and continued until 1793, this is divided into five parts and stands 93 meters high and has twenty-five church bells all having their own names. The cathedral was declared a National Monument in in 1931.
Los Peligros Medieval Bridge - The first stone laid for this bridge was in 1718, and this is an important part of the city and is still used by many even after construction of the new iron bridge, its a great spot to enjoy views of the city and the famous "La Sardina"

Accommodation - Pacoche Murcia 3 star, 57.34€ including breakfast for 2, parking was available at the hotel for 12.50€
This hotel was described as a modern hotel, and it did look that from the outside, but once inside I am not quite sure what they class as modern, but the room was far from that, although it did have all we needed for our one night stay, and most importantly good working air conditioning. The accommodation was situated 100 m from the Floridablanca Gardens and Just 5 minutes’ walk from the city’s old bridge over the River Segura and the Cathedral was about 10 minutes’ walk away, so a good location to see the local sights.
Back to the heat Murcia made Spanish news headlines for "topping the list for the hottest place in Spain on Monday 25th July, with official weather stations registered 46ºc, although some official recordings registered temperatures in excess of 50ºc, the rear windscreen wiper on our car warped in the heat.

Spanish Road Trip 2022
Day 2 - 26th July Murcia to Riopar, 208km
Travelling across country to our next destination, Riopar, we spotted a sign for a sanctuary which looked quite interesting, not knowing just how beautiful and well known this place was, we were surprised to find the wonderful Santurario de Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza (Sanctuary of the Virgin of Hope).
The sanctuary is located in a cave carved into the rock 6 km from Calasparra, and dates from the seventeenth century.
The sanctuary houses two images of the Virgin of Hope known as La Pequeñica and La Grande. The small image is said to have been found by a shepherd who kept his cattle in the cave eroded by the water of the Segura River, neighbours of the town tried to move it to the municipality of Calasparra but due to its weight they understood that the Virgin wanted to remain in the grotto and new rooms and were added.
The Sanctuary is among the top five in Spain, with about one million visitors a year, although it was very quiet when we visited.
The surrounding area is very picturesque with the Segura River nearby, and there are plenty of walks signposted, picnic areas and a lovely restaurant with stunning views.
Riopar
Riópar is a municipality located in the province of Albacete, Castile-La Mancha, Spain. It is located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, in the region of the Sierra de Alcaraz. It is located 118 km from the provincial capital, Albacete.
The main tourist attractions here are the mountain landscapes in the natural park of the Calares del Río Mundo and the Sima.
There are quite a few bars and restaurants in the town itself and a good municipal swimming pool. We had a wonderful mixed meat platter in one of the local restaurants which included, red and black sausages, chicken, pork, lamb chops with chips, bread and two drinks for 25€ which was great value for money.
Night 2 - Accommodation Hotel Riopar Spa , 3 star, 50€ including Breakfast and FREE parking
With views of the Segura and Alcaraz Mountains from the balcony, this air-conditioned room had simple, traditional décor, adequate for our one night stay, the only strange thing was that there was no tourist information available and the two vending machines remained empty, which was annoying when you required a bottle of water once the restaurant had closed and all the reception staff had left for the night.
Day 3, July 27th - Riopar, Mundo River
We visited the source of the Mundo River which was a pleasant, uphill walk through pretty forest paths, until reaching the waterfall, which at certain times of year "bursts" (El Chorro) in a spectacular jet, unfortunately for us at this time of year, water is scarce so the jet was nowhere to be seen, just the pretty waterfall.
As much as we enjoyed our visit, this was slightly disappointing and not a patch on our own Algar Falls as there were no swimming areas, but it was quiet busy and obviously a popular tourist attraction.
Would we visit again? No doubtful.
Day 3 Journey from Riopar to Jaén - 189km
A very pleasant journey across mountains and through acres and acres of olive groves.
We stopped for lunch in a lovely town called Baeza, enjoying some of their traditional tapas, and this town certainly looked a good place to stay on another road trip.
Jaén - Pronounced Xa´en, this is the urban capital city of the province of Jaén, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. The city is also known as the World Capital of Olive Oil, because it is the biggest producer of the oil, known by locals as liquid gold.
To be honest there did not seem to be a great deal here other than the famous cathedral which is considered one of the most important Renaissance-style cathedrals in Spain. Construction began in 1570 and was completed in 1802, due to the lengthy construction, different artistic styles could be see, the most prominent being Renaissance, the cathedral is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
We were lucky enough to have a small square right outside our hotel, and we enjoyed some time soaking up the atmosphere and listing to the live music provided, no idea what they were singing, but the crowd seemed to be enjoying it.
There were plenty of steep, narrow streets, in the historical centre, which made finding our accommodation slightly stressful.
Night 3 accommodation - Hotel Xauen, 3 Star, 75.00€ including breakfast, parking could be organised by the hotel but we found a nearby car park which coast 17.25€ and was easier than trying to find the hotel car park.
The hotel was situated in Jaén's historic and commercial centre, the added bonus was the rooftop sun terrace with loungers, and panoramic views of the cathedral, old town and mountains, unfortunately during our stay this was never staffed.
The hotel was in a good location with the cathedral just 300m away and quite a few bars and restaurants nearby.
Unfortunately this was one of our more expensive overnight stays and although the hotel looked great upon arrival, the air conditioning unit did not work properly and I was up and down all night trying to get it to stay on, but on the plus with it being my birthday they did upgrade us to a room with a king size bed. The plumbing also seemed to have some problems with a nasty smell every time the toilet was flushed.
Would we stay here again? probably not.
Day 4, July 28th - Jaen to Antequera, 153km
The original plan was to head to Seville which we love, but with it being known as the "Frying Pan of Europe" and the temperature in Jaen holding steady at around 38ºc, the thought of going to somewhere ven hotter was not appealing, so plans were changed and we decided to visit Antequera.
On our journey we found the wonderful town of Iznájar (Cordoba) with its Moorish Castle and Church which sit high above the reservoir (Embalse de Iznájar) which is the largest reservoir in the whole of Andalucía. Entrance into the castle was only 1€ and it was well worth the visit for the views alone.
The village itself is situated on top of a huge rocky outcrop 539 metres above sea level. The whole village was very picturesque with many colourful courtyards to explore and we found a wonderful cafe, 1 coke, 1 water and 2 tapas was only 3€, one tip on a road trip is always eat where they locals do.
Antequera (anteˈkeɾa) is a city and municipality located in the north of the province of Málaga, part of the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia, and is known as "the heart of Andalusia" (el corazón de Andalucía) because of its central location to Málaga.
There is a lot to see here, but obviously with only one day here we just enjoyed our time in the town itself.
As with most places in Spain (Benidorm being the exception to the rule) it can be difficult to find places to eat when you are hungry, most restaurants do not even open until 21.00, but we did find a nice little restaurant a short walk from the hotel to enjoy an evening meal.
As it was cooling down slightly it was the perfect time to have a walk round the town and enjoy the cobbled streets which wound their way up to the castle, (Alcazaba of Antequera) which is a restored Moorish fortress, constructed over Roman ruins in the 14th century.
Arco de los Gigantes - The Arco de los Gigantes (arch of the giants), is situated at the entrance to the Alcazaba, and near the Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor in Plaza Escritores beneath the fort. The Arco was built in the late 16th century to replace a Moorish gate. The Arch has a two meter thick wall, and is seven meters in height
Church of San Sebastian - Building on the church began in the mid 16th century, and it was not completed until the 18th century, resulting in a combination of artistic styles.
Night 4 - Accommodation Coso Viejo, 3 star, 41.40€
The Coso Viejo hotel was a typical 18th-century Andalusian house, situated in the historic centre of Antequera, situated opposite one of the towns squares with bars and restaurants nearby.
The hotel did offer parking at an additional cost, but we were lucky to find a parking space right outside.
The room was quite small and the furniture old fashioned, but that did fit in with the house itself and we had a pleasant stay.
Breakfast was not included but we found a wonderful coffee shop for our morning Tostada con Tomate, orange juice and coffee.
Would we stay here again? Yes if in the area.
Day 5 29th July - Antequera to Guadex 236km
I have always wanted to stay in a cave house, and now was my chance as Guadix is a well know area for them.
On our journey from Antequera I spotted a sign for Pinar Castle and Caves, the only problem with these signs is it never states how far away they are, they could be just round the corner, or in this instance over 50km off our route, but that is just part of the enjoyment of our road trip, the never quite knowing what you will discover along the way, and this was worth the detour, even though the cueva de las Ventanas were closed.
Moorish Castle of Píñar (Granada) - Situated just outside the town of Pinar, through many twisting and narrow streets, 1121 meters above sea level on a limestone outcrop sits the remains of this once imposing castle, from the Nasrid period (XIII-XV centuries) which was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1931.
Compared to some places we have visited, access was quite easy, as the first section was a track suitable for vehicles, which lead us to a parking lot at the base of the fortress, from there the climb to the interior of the castle was done on foot along a dirt track, not easy when it was 38ºc, but as we were the only people there it was well worth the effort for the piece and quiet and amazing views.
Guadix - The name Guadix itself from the Arabic Wadi Ash, which means ‘river of life’.
Barrio de Santiago or Barrio de las Cuevas and is situated in the province of Granada and is one of the oldest know human settlements in Spain, this area is famous for its troglodyte houses (cave houses) carved in the rocks. At present there are around 2000 caves, inhabited by around 3000 people, making it the largest cave complex in Europe, so crossing another item of my bucket list, staying in a cave house was looking very promising.
The reason there are many cave houses in this area is believed to be due to the taking of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492 when the Moors fled the city to the mountains, where they dug into the clay of the hills, building the cave houses, many of which can be seen today.
The best views of the area are from the Mirador Cerro de la Bala.
The town of Guadix sits at an altitude of 913 metres, a high plain at the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada and was once famous for its cutlery, but today is more well known for its earthenware, hemp goods, and hats.
The main sights to see in the town itself are the Guadix Cathedral (16th-18th centuries), which was built over a Moorish mosque in Gothic-Renaissance style, with its in Baroque style, and the Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress commanding the town, but after a lot of driving and the heat we just fancied a quiet night, and for a change opted for a kebab whilst it was available.
The town itself was very busy and seemed a popular location, and one we may return to on a future road trip.
Night 5 - Cueva El Jaraiz, 3 Star 54.00€
This was a 3 bedroom (2 double, 1 twin) cave house, with a fully fitted kitchen, bathroom, great Wifi signal and, its own private patio with BBQ. This was a wonderful place and I loved it, although the lounge area was still quite hot, the bedrooms were a comfortable temperature as they stay at a constant temperature of between 18-20ºc all year round, and were pitch black once the lights were out, making for a great nights sleep. For me just the experience and being able to say I have at last stayed overnight in a cave house was enough to keep me happy.
Unfortunately the only downside which did slightly ruin the experience for us was the very, VERY, VERY, persistent flies in the area, I blame these flies for Derek only wanting to stay one night.
Would we return? That would be a BIG yes from me.
Day 6 - July 30th - Guadix to El Ejido 106km
